Home Learning

Why do we set home learning?

Home learning is a fundamental part of the teaching and learning process, designed to enhance student learning, foster the development of important skills and bridge the gap between school and home. At Rednock School, home learning is set on a regular basis to support the following aspects of a student’s seven-year learning journey:

  • Reinforcement of learning
  • Development of study skills
  • Preparation for upcoming lessons
  • Encouragement of parental involvement
  • Assessment and feedback
  • Encouragement of lifelong learning

How do we set home learning?

Home learning is set for all students in Years 7-13 on Class Charts.

As students progress through their seven-year learning journey, the frequency, duration and complexity of homework are gradually increased to reflect their growing maturity, developing study skills and the increasing academic demands of their courses. Details of this can be found in the Home learning Policy.

What support is available in school for students to complete home learning?

Students are supported to complete their home learning by their class teachers.

The Learning Resource Centre (LRC) is open at break, lunch and after school every day for students to complete homework, where they have access to a well-stocked library, computers and a printer. In addition, a staffed Home Learning Club runs after school in the LRC on Tuesday and Wednesday. These sessions have staff on hand to provide support and guidance for students completing home learning.

There is also a lunchtime home learning support session that runs every day in an ICT suite, providing students with time, and access to computers, to complete their home learning.

How can home support with the completion of home learning?

Where possible, students should work in an environment which will promote concentration. Simple steps can be taken to limit distractions, such as turning off the TV or leaving a phone in another room. Closing apps like Facebook or disabling alerts on devices are also a good way to promote concentration.

Parents and carers can access Class Charts through the app to keep up-to-date with the home learning their child is being set and when it is due in.

We are often asked “What computer should I buy my child?”. Whilst we can’t recommend a specific device, our IT Support department has put together this guide to help you decide what is best for your household: Computer Advice For Parents/Carers

What online tools are used for home learning?

In some subjects, certain online tools are used frequently for home learning. The main ones are outlined below:

  • Maths – Sparx Maths
  • Science – Sparx Science
  • MFL – Memrise for KS3. Students will be provided with specific links depending on their year group and the language they are studying.
  • Computing – KS4 and KS5 use Smart Revise
